The UK Rehabilitation Council
Stakeholder Event
Friday, 10th July 2009 from 09.30 to 14.45
BT Centre, 81 Newgate Street, London EC1A 7AJ
The UK Rehabilitation Council (UKRC) is holding a Stakeholder Event to allow interested parties to have their say and provide input on what is needed from a lead organisation to act as an umbrella body for the rehabilitation community.
Clinical and vocational rehabilitation in the UK has historically been less effective than in many comparable countries, despite the skills of the professionals involved, because of a lack of co-ordination. In November 2006 a stakeholder event at UNUM offices in Dorking started a process to draw together the fragmented rehabilitation community. This event culminated in a Shadow Council being formed in 2007. Funding from the Department for Work and Pensions in March 2008 to develop Rehabilitation Standards, provided a vehicle from which to establish the UKRC. It also provided an opportunity to draw stakeholders together, encourage dialogue and provide a voice for both clinical and vocational rehabilitation.
The Standards have now been published and the UKRC has received funding from the Department of Health's Third Sector Grants Programme to pursue objectives in its 5-year strategy, including developing a membership base and elected Council Board. This second stakeholder event at the BT Centre is to gain stakeholder views on the UKRC becoming the "voice for rehabilitation" and the lead umbrella body for clinical and vocational rehabilitation.
Your views matter and this is your opportunity to have a stake in how the Council evolves into a demoncratic body, led and run by its members.
Event numbers are limited but we have a few places available.
Responses are required by Thursday, 2nd July 2009.

The UK Rehabilitation Standards
The Rehabilitation standards are now available to download. The launch of the Standards took place at The Work Foundation, Westminster on 19th May 2009 and was attended by over 120 guests from the rehabilitation community. Lord McKenzie of Luton gave the keynote address and other speakers included Tim Ablett from the insurance industry and Dr. Fred Middleton who was the inspiration for setting up the UKRC.
Our Mission
The UKRC exists to provide an authoritative voice and focal point for anyone with a stake in medical and vocational rehabilitation and to support those who are working to help sick and injured people regain their independence.
The Council
The UK Rehabilitation Council is a community of rehabilitation associations, rehabilitation providers, clients and other stakeholder groups. Our common goal is to ensure access to high quality medical and vocational rehabilitation services in the UK.
Acting as an umbrella organisation for this broad community, the Council has been established to provide a united voice on issues of importance to us. The Council seeks to coordinate the efforts of its members, in order that our combined efforts have the greatest possible impact.
We began our work in 2008 with financial support from the Department of Work and Pensions and from the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives.
Council Members are drawn from a broad representation from all sectors involved in or with an interest in rehabilitation.
Our Objectives
- To ensure quality through certification, accreditation, endorsement, standards and research into best practice.
- To provide a one-stop shop for information about rehabilitation.
- To identify/endorse best practice.
- To identify training needs.
- To engage with partners, clients and stakeholders, especially government ministers, departments and agencies, to ensure joint working and sharing of agendas and priorities.
Registration
We have a membership of like-minded individuals and organisations who want to build a stronger Rehab Community. If you would like to join us, please join our membership Register, to share your views and to receive updates on our initiatives.
